The article will be a short discussion how to bring out the pattern in wootz steel. If you have noticed, wootz will look very similar to the ordinary everyday steel. It is the etch that will bring the inner beauty of the steel to the eyes of the beholder. Since there are two phases in the steel, an etch must be selected that can accurately outline the boundaries. Too often an etch is chosen that will coarsely eat at the boundaries and muddy the picture in the steel. The concentrations of acid must be tailored to the steel, such as to selectively eat on the steel matrix and leave the carbides shiny and accurate. Even a properly prepared blade and a good etch is no guarantee that the carbides in the wootz steel will produce a pleasing sight. I will begin my process by briefly describing the surface preparation process. Surface Preparation After the blade has been tempered properly, it must be brought up to high polish prior to the etch the blade is polished by using aluminum oxide paper of 320, 400, 600 grit paper is placed under a flat oak sanding block and is worked at a 45 deg angle to blade, then opposite 45, then down the length of blade the blade must be lubed with lite oil during sanding or else you may risk burnishing the blade ( I use corn oil) constantly renew the oil as it gets blackened The Etch
